Steamfitters/pipefitters build, assemble, maintain & repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel in heating, cooling, lubricating and other processes. Because of this, much of their work is industrial or commercial. Pipefitters also remove and replace worn components, do general maintenance work and may work on plant shutdowns.

Responsibilities

  • Install piping systems in commercial buildings or industrial plants
  • Study blueprints, drawings & specifications
  • Determine the type of pipe & tools and sequence of tasks
  • Make detailed sketches for pipe & equipment fabrication and installation
  • Measure, cut, thread, bend, assemble, join and install pipes, valves & fittings
  • Use testing equipment to check systems for leaks

What You’ll Need

Entrance Requirements

English 20-2, Math 20-3 & Science 10 OR All 5 Canadian General Education Development tests OR Entrance Exam.

Apprenticeship Program: 4 years, includes 8 weeks of technical training and 1,500 hours (minimum) on-the-job training per year, and exam. Journeyperson certificate awarded after successful completion. As an apprentice, you also earn while you learn.
